How to Reset a GFCI Outlet

A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a safety feature required usually when an outlet is installed near water–bathrooms, kitchens, exterior fixtures. They are designed to trip when a current imbalance occurs. When this happens, it’s easy to reset the outlet.

Once the GFCI outlet is located (which is often the biggest challenge), resetting it is simple.

If your GFCI outlet continues to trip then you may have a short or a defective GFCI outlet. You may want to contact a licensed electrician to address the problem for you.

Sometimes, however, a GFCI out simply gives out and must be replaced. Most installations only require a screw drive and an understanding of how to turn off the power to the outlet.  Replacing the outlet is simple but you may want to consult an electrician if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.
